Editor's Note: This is the nightmare scenario.  A city as populous as Baghdad or Tikrit can do terrible damage to an invading army if they engage that army in urban combat.  Likewise, an invading army will be required to obliterate buildings and neighborhoods to root out the attackers.  These are the seeds of Stalingrad. - wrp

Baghdad Civilians will Fight Invaders
ABC News

Sunday 23 March 2003

A Hobart man with family in Baghdad says they are determined to fight to protect Iraq from the invading coalition forces.

Saad Al-Shawi came to Australia as a refugee after fleeing Iraq in 1990.

He says his family were fearful and angry when the war started last week.

Mr Al-Shawi says his family supported the United States efforts to remove Saddam Hussein during the 1991 Gulf War, but felt betrayed when that didn't happen.

"Now even the civilians are determined to fight, not only the army, and they say it's not time to get rid of Saddam Hussein to us, we think we should put our hands with Saddam Hussein at this time, for the interest of our own country and after that we'll start thinking and planning and hoping and praying Saddam Hussein goes away," he said.
